Willie H. Lopez Sr.
June 25, 1935 - May 22, 2022
Willie H. Lopez Sr. of Houston, Texas entered eternal rest on Sunday, May 22, 2022 at 86 years of age. Willie (Shaggy) was born on June 25, 1935 to loving parents Pedro Lopez and Dora Hernandez in the small country town of Brookshire, Texas. He was one of eighth siblings and half-siblings. As a young boy he learned the value of good honest work, having to assist in caring for his mother and siblings. For these very reasons he did not have the opportunity to finish secondary school. He was self-taught, learning life lessons as he went along. Dad knew what it was to grow up without, during his early years, thus never taking anything for granted. Dad was an extremely dedicated and loyal individual. His first major job was with Rosemarian distribution, then becoming a produce employee beginning with Weingarten's grocery, and ending a long career with H-E-B. He was a valued and prized employee wherever he worked, prompting many offers from other competitors to lure him away in the hopes of him joining their teams. Dad met the love of his life, Amelia Castro, at a young age and they married on May 15, 1954. They had (4) children and lived almost inseparable for 67 years, until her passing in November of 2021. He worked hard for what he had and did whatever he could to ensure that his wife and children did not go without, at times working 2-3 jobs to make sure we had the essentials: a roof over our heads, food to eat, and a good education. He worked hard to put his last two children through private education, from kindergarten through graduation. He always wanted his children to have what he did not have growing up. Dad loved attending church services with Mom, as both had a long-standing relationship with God and the Catholic faith. Dad was also a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus Houston/Galveston Chapter through Our Lady of St. John's Catholic Church. For most men, who follow Jesus, there comes a time when duty extends beyond our own lives, beyond how we lead our families, and into how we serve our fellow man. Dad was a huge believer in this, and to serve others was embedded in his soul. If anyone was suffering, in crisis or just in need of a visit, Dad was always there. He never stopped caring for his loved ones or people in need and he touched the hearts of so many during his life's journey. He was a strong patriarch for his family and a good friend to all, a man who would give his shirt to a stranger. He was always a great father who always made sacrifices to take care of his family. He was selfless, always caring more about others than himself. Even in his final days, he would always tell his children to "just take care of yourselves and most importantly your family". Dad will be forever remembered for his gentle eyes, kind demeanor, very caring heart and his unconditional love. Although our hearts are heavy, we will celebrate his life and find comfort that he is happy and content to be reunited with his true love Amelia. It gives us great comfort to know they are both in Heaven watching over us all. Dad was proceeded in death by his beautiful wife Amelia, father Pedro, mother Dora, sisters Carol Luna, Janie Perez, Mary Helen Torres, brother Frank Lopez and granddaughter Victoria Leigh Lopez. He is survived by Willie Lopez Jr. (son) and his wife Angie; Patricia Martinez (daughter) and her husband Robert; Greg Lopez (son) and his wife Melissa; Ray Anthony Lopez (son) and his wife Dora; (17) grandchildren; (21) great grandchildren and (2) great-great grandchildren.
