September 8, 1941 - April 2, 2022
Devoted daughter, friend, wife, mother, grandmother, skilled bingo/casino enthusiast. Carmen Escamilla was born on September 8th, 1941 in San Antonio, only daughter to mother Torivia H. Dennis (Nana). Their mother-daughter relationship was one like no other, having lived together for over 46 years until Torivias' peaceful passing on June 12th, 2008. Having met as kids in the 3rd grade, Carmen was happily married to her devoted husband and childhood sweetheart Jesse T. Escamilla for over 62 years. Growing up an only daughter, Carmen wished for a big family and was blessed with five children. Carmen was the embodiment of what it meant to be an unconditionally loving mother and raised her children to be strong, fearless, caring, and independent just as she was. From her children, Carmen was granted 13 Grandkids, 20 great-grandkids, and 1 expecting great-great granddaughter. With her wish of a big family being fulfilled, Carmen became not only the matriarch, but also the glue of the Escamilla family. Despite a tight schedule, she was a dedicated grandmother who somehow made it possible to actively be present in their many events such as; grandparent days, baseball games, dance recitals, and graduation events to praise their successes and encourage their dreams. Carmen truly lived her life to the fullest through simple pleasures such as traveling to San Antonio where she consistently hosted game night to win her family's earnings, and cheering on her favorite Houston sports teams, however nothing made her happier than spending her time with her friends and family. The only thing that came close to quality time was her weekly bingo trips, and annual bus trips to Las Vegas and Coushatta to live out her high roller dreams. Carmen was a source of joy and love to everyone around her, with the ability to light up a room just by entering and shedding her effortless sense of humor that could lift any spirit from the darkest place. She was an earth-angel who was selfless, courageous, and inspirable. Words cannot articulate how much she will be missed but her memory will forever live on by those she has impacted. Carmen Escamilla passed away April 2nd, 2022 and is preceded in death by her mother Torivia H. Dennis and son Jesse Escamilla Jr. She is survived by her husband Jesse Sr., daughters and sons Bertha Gonzales, Rachel, Roger, and Michael Escamilla, and her granddaughter Yvette Marie Morin.
